The movie “In the Shadow of the Moon”, a historical account of the U.S. Apollo moon program that sent twelve NASA astronauts onto the lunar surface and another six orbiting around it, goes into its first limited release on Friday, September 7, 2007.
The movie, directed by David Sington, will gradually be more widely distributed in the following weeks.
With NASA’s Space Transportation System (STS) and its space shuttles winding down from a historic three-decade run, which included countless accomplishments and two very terrible disasters, the next-generation manned spacecraft Orion, along with its Ares launch vehicle, is stepping up for future missions to the International Space Station, the Moon, Mars, asteroids, and other exotic places maybe not even thought about yet. Russia plans to send a manned mission to the moon by 2025 and establish a permanent base shortly thereafter, the head of the Russian space agency Roskosmos said Friday.
“According to our estimates, we will be ready for a manned flight to the moon in 2025,” Roskosmos chief Anatoly Perminov told state news agency RIA Novosti. A station that could be inhabited could be built there between 2027 and 2032, he said.
Russia had originally sought to join a U.S. plan to establish a moon base in 2024. But Perminov said earlier this year the U.S. rebuffed the offer to jointly explore the moon. Read more
