LAS CRUCES, N.M. - With less than a year until flight tests of NASA’s Constellation Program, work is under way on a launch pad that will host the first of those tests.
Boeing has completed a developmental heat shield for NASA’s Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) that is designed to protect future astronauts from extreme heat during re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere following lunar and low-Earth orbit missions.

NASA christened a new test launch pad for its new Orion spaceships on Wednesday.
With less than a year until flight tests of NASA’s Constellation Program, work is under way on a launch pad that will host the first of those tests.

A new launch pad being built in New Mexico will host the first escape systems tests for NASA’s Orion capsule, the successor to the space shuttle.
