The Magnificent Meteor Crater in Flagstaff, Arizona

Many of those who grew up in Arizona have fond memories of family trips going up to Flagstaff, Arizona. It is fascinating how you can drive up from an arid desert to a vast pine forest in just a two hour drive up the I-17. Camping trips and visits to the Grand Canyon are common. But the meteor crater often sticks out in my mind.

The meteor crater is a vast meteorite impact crater. It is around 3,900 feet in diameter and around 500 foot deep. I am always in awe when I take a visit there. I believe early childhood visits to the meteor crater site are what ignited my passion for astrophysics and all things space.

At the site, you have the option to go through the small space history museum inside the main building. I recall this small exhibition having interactive educational stations and a small chunk of a meteorite inside.

    Once you step outside, that’s when you’ll see the depth of this sight. The crater is huge and undeniably shocking. If you are going up to Northern Arizona, consider taking a visit to this educational spectacle and ignite the science-lover in you.

Many people grow up dreaming of going to space. If you asked a class of kindergarteners what they would like to be when they grow up, I guarantee you that most them would say that they wanted to be an astronaut. As we grow up, reality sets in and our dreams of going up into space begin to dwindle. For the average person, becoming an astronaut is a statistically improbable plight. Each year, NASA
receives around 2,000 submissions of highly qualified applicants who want to become astronauts. Only around 10 percent of them are picked. If you are thinking, “Hey, that’s not so bad!”, keep in mind that you need at least a bachelor’s degree in math, engineering or a hard physical science and
they also require you to have either three years of job experience of 1,000 hours of experience being a pilot-in-command of a jet aircraft. There are only around 50 astronauts actively working for NASA at the moment. While becoming an astronaut remains to be a pipe dream to many, not everyone who wants to go to space has aspirations of working for NASA. Many would like to explore space out of sheer curiosity. It is a place unknown to most of us and many wish to see it up-close and in person. Many are also eager for new space technology due to global warming. Virgin Galactic is a proposed company within the Virgin Group, which intends to offer a flight to space to everyday citizens, for an extremely hefty fee of around $250,000. Founded in 2004, this company aims to bring something to consumers which has never been seen before. Virgin is attempting to pioneer space tourism. The notorious entrepreneur Richard Branson has once again brought forth an innovative idea, bringing forth a space travel industry. Richard Branson has always fostered innovation with his Virgin empire and he aims to bring something to the economy; a kind of travel which has never been made available to the general public before. The highly imaginative and ambitious businessman has created this company in hopes of providing space exploration as an explorative commodity. The company has seen many delays within regards to their first launch, but it hopes to be the first in the industry of commercial space travel.

Virgin Galactic’s website states that only a couple of hundred people have made it to space. The company stated that it aims to make space travel and exploration available to the rest of us. Virgin Atlantic has created and designed multiple space vehicles which aim to bring us up, up and away! These two spaceships are the SpaceShipTwo and WhiteKnightTwo.

Virgin Galactic also highly prioritizes the safety of it’s potential customers and it proposes that each potential flyer must undergo a 3-day space training course prior to boarding the spaceship.

The company has been looking into collaborating with NASA, but this has yet to happen. The launch of Virgin Galactic has been postponed and delayed for years now. Virgin Galactic has long surpassed its’ original, proposed launch dates. While this news has disappointed many wannabe astronauts, it is to be expected for such a complicated and potentially dangerous idea. Consumer safety comes first and this kind of business venture is not one which should be taken lightly. Can Virgin Galactic make it? Only time will tell.

Want to Go to Space — What Will it Cost?

For nearly a century science fiction writers have predicted commercial space travel. They imagined consumers taking an interstellar cruise or simply hopping a shuttle from the earth to the moon for a vacation. Back in 1964 one science newsletter predicted that earthlings would be jaunting up to a space station by 1980 — for$11,700 which translates to about $90,000 in 2014 dollars.

Now, we know that space tourism isn’t a reality yet, but it will be by the end of the decade. Experts predict that 2020 is the year that private companies will begin sending people into space. It will likely be a quick trip out of the atmosphere, with a mere five minutes experiencing zero gravity before returning to land, but it still counts as space travel.

Billionaires in Space

The uber rich are already finding their way into space. For those with both the cash and the time for training, it is possible to take a two-week flight to the International Space Station. The current pricetag is estimated to be in the $30-50 million range.

Who can afford it? Richard Garriott, a video game developer from the US and Canadian Guy Laliberte, billionaire and Cirque du Soleil founder, have already been in space. News reports also state that Sarah Brightman, Britian’s most popular diva, started training in January for a trip to ISS in October of this year. There are numerous rumors about other moguls, pop stars, and celebrities with plans to go into space in the near future.

Space Travel for the Rest of Us

The pool of travelers who can afford the multi-million dollar fees is rather small. This is why so many private companies are competing to be the first to offer space travel to the masses. Well, the masses who can come up with a quarter of a million dollars for a short flight.

Virgin Galactic is already charging $250,000 to take passengers on a suborbital flight. KosmoKurs, a Russian space company, is pre-selling tickets that range from $200,000 to $250,000 for a round trip into space. Other companies hoping to cash in include Blue Origin, SpaceX, and Vulcan Aerospace. There are also a few Chinese companies in development who hope to enter the commercial space race.

What can you expect for your fare? You’ll have to pass health tests to ensure your body can survive both zero gravity and the extra g-forces of take off and landing. You’ll undergo training on how to handle the flight. Then you’ll board a ship (designs differ between companies) and be launched by rocket just beyond the earth’s atmosphere. Virgin is promising three to four minutes of zero gravity while KosmoKurs guarantees a full five minute experience. All commercial space flights are limited so that passengers won’t have to adapt to the changes in gravity but will simply enjoy their brief experience.

Whether you will actually have the opportunity to go into space in a mere five years depends on many factors, including whether you manage your money well enough to pay the fare ( It also depends on the ability of these companies to come through on their promise. Space craft are still be designed and tested and some designs aren’t holding up. Witness the crash of Virgin Galactic’s experimental flight in October 2014. It also depends on the state of the economy and the ability of said companies to meet the demand for space tourism. The price may go up or it may go down by the time the first flights take off. Women at the Forefront of Scientific Breakthroughs

Women make up more than half of today’s workforce, yet the number of women in the STEM professions (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) continues to lag, with women representing only 23% of the total science work force in 2011. That number has essentially remained stagnant since 1990, but that doesn’t mean that female scientists aren’t changing the world in a big way. Here’s a rundown of some of the most influential women scientists from around the globe.

Dr. Livia Eberlin specializes in mass spectrometry at Stanford. She’s a post-doctoral chemistry scholar who developed a technique to help more efficiently diagnose and evaluate cancer. Her research is being tested in a pilot program at Stanford, where it has already helped to improve the success rate of surgeries for stomach cancer.

Professor Laurie Glimcher is the dean of the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York. In addition to being the first woman dean of a medical school in New York, she is also a Professor of Medicine. Her specialty is immunology. Her discovery of new factors influencing the immune system’s responses to allergens and infections is paving the way for new treatments for allergies, asthma, cancer, childhood diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

Professor Brigitte Kieffer is a Professor of Psychiatry and the Monique H. Bourgeois Chair of Pervasive Developmental Disorders at McGill University. In 1992, she isolated a gene in the brain that alleviates pain, something that had eluded other scientists for years. Her studies of the brain mechanisms involved in drug addiction, mental illness and depression have helped researchers develop new treatments.

Professor Cecilia Bouzat of Argentina is a leading researcher in the field of neurotransmitter pharmacology. Her in-depth study of the way brain how brain cells communicate with one another and with the body’s muscles have opened the door to new treatment options for depression, Alzheimer’s disease and addiction.

Professor Kayo Inaba of Kyoto University has focused on abnormal cell development in diseases such as cancer. Her research revealed that these cells could be treated outside the body and then reintroduced as part of a treatment plan. Already her discoveries have led to new treatments for cancer.

Dr. Giuliana di Martino is a physicist at Imperial College London. Her PhD work was in the emerging field of quantum plasmonics. While she was a visiting researcher at Boston University, she helped to develop more efficient semiconductor solar cells.

Katherine Sparks Woodle is a senior graduate student at Penn State University. Her research is in the field of particle astrophysics. She is also a champion for women in science, and has been involved in the Upward Bound Math/Science Mentorship Program at Penn State.

Top Science News of 2014

December is the time to look back at the year that is ending and make note of the most exciting and newsworthy stories. In science, that means chronicling discoveries, inventions, and advancements. Here are some of the scientific stories that 2014 will be remembered for.


2014 will be remember for exploration as NASA took a “Giant Leap Forward” and humanity landed a probe on a comet.  Commercial space flight had setbacks when a Antares rocket exploded on October 28th and a few days later SpaceShipTwo crashed on a test flight, killing one pilot.  Such accidents are always a part of developing new technologies, but they may lead to setbacks in the ability of commercial programs to find backers and, eventually, passengers.

NASA ended the year on a high note with the successful test flight of the Orion spacecraft (for which this blog was originally named). The craft is designed to play a crucial role in the “Giant Leap Forward” program which will eventually put astronauts on Mars within 20 years.

The European Space Agency had perhaps the best year of anyone. Their Rosetta spacecraft made contact with Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, after a ten-year journey.  In August it became the first spacecraft to successfully orbit a comet and send back groundbreaking data.  Then in November, Rosetta launched the Philae probe in the world’s first attempt to land on a comet.  While Philae did land, it encountered several difficulties and was ultimately turned off.  The Agency may turn it back on in August 2015, when the position of the comet will be better for charging the solar batteries that power Philae.  In the meantime Rosetta will spend a year sending back unprecedented data on the composition and structure of the comet and scientist will be studying the data that Philae managed to broadcast during before being powered down.


Understanding DNA, chromosomes, and their sequences will continue to occupy geneticists for decades – or centuries – to come.  In 2014 there were two breakthroughs that stood out in the field.

First, students in the Build a Genome class at John Hopkins University managed to create a yeast chromosome. They did this by synthesizing individual base molecules and inserting them into yeast.  Eventually the man-made chromosome replaced the natural one without being rejected.  This is the first ever successful creation of a working chromosome.

In other news CRISPR is a tool helping scientists map models of disease in animals. The abbreviation stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats and the tool is expected to improve gene-editing abilities leading to better methods of gene therapy.


While Ebola was undoubtedly the lead story of 2014, other viruses were at work and the US government cracked down on labs who handle disease. The latest outbreak of Ebola in west Africa started in Guinea back in March. By December 6,000 people had died and over 17,000 were infected with the disease.  This includes over 600 health care workers, two of which were US nurses. Health care workers also had a higher death rate than patients. This outbreak threatens not just the fragile health care system in the area, but also the economies and even governments of nations in the region.  The US and other countries have poured millions into aid and research for the disease with new treatments and vaccines currently undergoing clinical trials.

Other diseases that made the news in 2014 included chikungunya, a tropical disease that hit the US for the first time this year and an enterovirus that spread across the US causing respiratory illness, mainly in children.

The first half of 2014 saw several safety issues arise at federally-funded labs handling deadly diseases.  Contaminated samples, active viruses being shipped instead of inactive ones, and the discovery of “lost” vials of deadly diseases all indicated a troubling breakdown in protocols.  After lengthy congressional hearings and agency reviews, new technology and protocols were put in place to prevent future accidents.


Modern man thinks. That is what sets him apart from ancient evolutionary ancestors who were more animalistic in their reactions to their environment.  Or so we like to think.  In December researchers published a report describing a shell found in Java, Indonesia.  The shell is engraved with a zig zag pattern, indicating that desire to record a symbol. Symbolic thought is considered to be the basis of language and higher intelligence.  This shell was created not by homo sapiens or Neandertals (the two species previously proven to exhibit symbolic thought), it was created by homo erectus and has been dated at 430,000 to 540,000 years ago.

Advanced Medical Technology Is Everywhere

For decades science fiction has depicted medical robots as part of some far distant future.  Something for our great-great grandchildren.  That future is actually the present.  Robotic surgeries are performed every day, supported by other advanced technologies that make medical diagnosis more precise and the treatment of illnesses and injuries more successful.

In a recent ranking of the top hospitals in the world for high tech medical treatment a California hospital finished in first place — and the US took slightly more than half of the top 30 spots.  However, 60% of the hospitals in the top 10 are outside the US. There has been a rise in medical tourism, people traveling to other countries for surgeries, treatments, and even diagnosis, over the past decade.  While many experts explain this by pointing to the rising cost of health care in the US and other developed countries, the spread of advanced medical technology is also a factor.  Patients are able to get advanced treatments at more affordable prices, and in some cases better treatment than they could afford at home.

Futuristic Technology

Top hospitals are going paperless.  Electronic record systems provide a range of benefits to patients as well as doctors, which is why modern hospitals are being built around these systems while older hospitals are struggling to install and implement them.  Imagine every test result, medicine prescribed, and doctor notation in one file that is easy to search, navigate, and read (those jokes about doctors’ handwriting are based in fact). That record can be pulled up at any terminal throughout a clinic or hospital and updated or amended as needed. Top systems streamline this process and reduce medical errors in treatment, prescriptions, and diagnosis.

Digital imaging has been around for a few decades, but new systems are integrating these machines.  Several hospitals opened in the past few years have included what is known as a “digital diagnostic hub” which features not just CT, MRI, and PET scan, but the ability to conduct digital endoscopy and mammography.  The diagnostic equipment is integrated with the surgical suites so that instant, high definition scans are available prior to surgery.

High-tech surgery started with lasers and laproscopy but has advanced to computer surgery that include robotic scalpels and arms.  Gamma Knife surgery is a cutting edge technology and the most-advanced equipment can be found not in the US, but in England.  Computer-aided surgery includes the  integration of scans to navigate procedures, with the software telling the doctor exactly where to go, as well as the use of robotic “surgeons” to conduct everything from joint replacement to microscopic heart and brain surgery.

Some other advanced medical equipment and treatments now available in so-called “third world” countries include digital subtraction angiography equipment, linear accelerator machines, shockwave lithotripters, 3D C-arm, molecular-targeting therapy, and bloodless 5th digital spinal operations.

Western countries like the US, Canada, Germany and the UK have many high tech hospitals, but other countries are quickly catching up. China, Japan, Singapore, India, Thailand, Turkey, South Korea, and even Lebanon have invested in providing cutting edge care to their own citizens and to medical tourists coming from the West.
